What is functional medicine health coaching?

The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA) program is a collaboration with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and is an accredited program by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches. FMCA coaches are expertly trained in the IFM’s client-centered methodology, nutrition and therapeutic food plans, sleep optimization, movement, stress management, gut health, digestion and immunity, hormone balance, environmental health, chronic disease management, motivational interviewing, goal and habit theory, and change theory. We use these tools to help our clients create their personalized vision of health and then work with them to move toward achieving their wellness goals.

Because Functional Medicine health coaching is client-centered, we focus on your needs and goals before anything else. Health coaches partner with clients privately, or support practitioners within the collaborative care model, breaking down big lifestyle changes into accessible steps. Health coaches are experts in making healthy lifestyle behavior change happen. Their fluency in functional medicine principles and motivational strategies qualifies them to partner with doctors and serve as the implementers within the collaborative care team. Health coaches extend the doctor’s reach by offering individualized support to implement protocols, address roadblocks, and work through the day-to-day challenges that arise for patients making significant changes.

What is functional medicine?

“Functional medicine turns the tree upside down and looks at the health of the roots first to understand why the leaves look diseased.“

–Vincent Pedre, MD

The Functional Medicine model seeks to identify and restore the root cause(s) of disease rather than solely treat the symptoms. The focus is centered on the patient as an interconnected whole: individually unique in biology, genetics, lifestyle, and environment.

Characteristics of Functional Medicine

  • An individualized, biology systems-based approach to treatment; one disease can stem from numerous causes and vary between person to person.

  • Aims to fill in the gaps to provide the body what it essentially needs and remove what it doesn’t.

  • Research-based, functional approach to medical care that combines the best techniques of Western Conventional, Naturopathic, and Integrative Medicines.

  • Utilizes advanced diagnostic testing to pinpoint imbalances and/or toxic exposures as well as their interactions with the individual’s genetics.

  • Empowers the patient to take control of their current state of health and pursue lifelong wellness. Prioritizes involving and educating the patient throughout the treatment process.

  • Views the patient as individually unique in biology, genetics, lifestyle, and environment.

  • Considers a patient’s entire health history from birth up to the current moment in time.

  • Supports the body’s intelligent abilities to heal and thrive.

  • Prescribes a holistic and individualized plan to reverse or improve root-causes and move the patient toward an optimized level of wellness.

  • Seeks to restore balance within the individual’s lifestyle as a preventative of disease and a component of therapeutic treatments – (including choices about exercise/movement, response to stress,  nutrition, relationships, and sleep.)

How can patients benefit from working with a health coach?

When a patient needs to change their habits for their health, Functional Medicine Health Coaches can make those changes more accessible and sustainable. Health coaches help patients set goals and provide achievable steps and strategies for them to maintain healthy changes long-term. Just like a functional medicine clinician, a health coach makes sure patients feel heard and that they share ownership of their healing process.

Do I need to be referred by a physician to work with a health coach?

You do not need a referral from a physician to work with a functional medicine health coach and may work directly with us one on one as a private client. Although, many times we do collaborate with physicians, and patients are referred to us following receiving a new diagnosis or plan of care.

Why is Veritas “rooted in Christ?”

Many health and wellness practices do not recognize spirituality and faith as an integral part of holistic well-being. We believe it is paramount. Purpose drives our every motivation for maintaining optimal wellness, and that is why we integrate it into every aspect of your coaching journey individually, as it personally applies to you. When we put our Catholic faith at the center of our lives and our own journey to optimal wellness, we see the greater purpose and relationship to how living a holistically healthy life enables us to keep our eyes fixed on Christ and His will for our lives.

” The number one obstacle people face on their journey toward better health is lack of support. Everyone wants to get healthy, but we all need someone to hold us accountable and to ask the right questions. We need someone to cheer us on and help us create a plan to achieve our goals. That is where a coach with the right training and the heart of a teacher comes in. “
